Released in 2004, Shaun of the Dead has turned from a virtually unknown low-budget feature, to a modest hit, to a time-tested cult classic film. Clark Collis, longtime writer at Entertainment Weekly, chronicles not only the making of the movie, but also the impact of the process (and the subsequent success of the film) on a group of close friends who initially had just a casual dream of creating it. The book is the first behind-the-scenes look at Shaun of the Dead, and is written in the same British, whimsical nature as the film itself. Collis interviewed endless zombies, Shaun mega-fans (i.e., Gillian Anderson, Chris Martin of Coldplay), and the full cast and crew, including Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and prominent director Edgar Wright (Baby Driver). Wright and Pegg both have read the book in its entirety, loved it, and are fully supportive of the project. The hardbound edition is selling well in the US, UK, and elsewhere based on the fan bases of the film, and a full slate of publicity is planned for the new paperback release. Being released just before Halloween, the title can take full advantage of both the Halloween and traditional holiday seasons, but also throughout 2023 as a full slate of film tie-ins, appearances, press, and on-line events are planned. Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright will help the publicize the book, and he is also currently in the public's eye with two recent new films, Last Night in Soho and The Sparks Brothers. Sales opportunities exist at traditional book retailers, but also should sell well at gift stores (i.e., Urban Outfitters, FYE), non-traditional book retailers (i.e., Hot Topic), comic book shops, and at library systems.
