English Reading and Vocabulary I is a university-level English as a second language textbook designed to help students study English vocabulary, learn how to read, and develop valuable reading and comprehension skills. The text helps students cultivate a solid foundation in the English language so they have the confidence and ability to interact with other English speakers in professional, educational, and social environments. Students begin with the ABC's of reading and progress through reading passages of increasing length and complexity. The text presents vocabulary and grammar in the form of a real-life story of a student traveling to the United States to study. The 500 most commonly used English words from the New General Service List are used a minimum of five times throughout the book, reinforcing vocabulary through repeated exposure in context. The text also allows for translation, letting learners convert English examples into their native tongue to promote a higher level of comprehension. Designed for beginner-level adult learners, English Reading and Vocabulary I is a valuable core textbook for intensive higher education English as a second language courses. Emily Elliott graduated with a B.S. in psychology from Oklahoma State University and an M.S. in education from Capella. She worked in West Africa for almost ten years in local language literacy and teaching English. She was a curriculum chair at Kansas State University and is currently teaching English in Afghanistan. Jolene M. McConnell is an English language instructor at Kansas State University. She earned her M.A. in TESOL and linguistics from Ball State University. She was an English Language Fellow for 2017-2018 in Tiranë, Albania where she worked with the Institute for Educational Development, a part of the Ministry of Education, to improve the quality of English education through in-service teacher training workshops. Previously, Jolene has taught English abroad in Poland, Korea, and on board ships.
