This volume collects papers presented at the Heidelberg Pompeius-Conference, held on the 24th of September 2014. It concentrated on Cn. Pompeius Magnus’ role as a power politician, which the six papers elaborate with slightly different foci. The volume begins with an overview of Pompeius‘ exceptional career, here explained as the result of his having internalised power-political lessons. In addition, key points of his political biography are reinterpreted, notably his first consulship in 70 B.C. and his return from the east in 62 B.C.. Pompeius’ amicitia-network and the way he fulfilled his role as political patronus or amicus are studied in depth. Further topics are how his exemplum was treated in the historiography by Velleius Paterculus, as well as Pompeius’ construction policies, which he consciously employed in power politics. The volume is completed by a short preface and an extensive thematic introduction, which not only summarises the individual contributions and recapitulates the state of research, but also provides an initial outline of Pompeius as a power politician. The volume includes indices of personal names, places, topics and sources.
