Fari Shams Projekt European Civilization – Peter the Great and the Order of Things (Europäische Zivilisation – Peter der Große und die Ordnung der Dinge) entfaltet sich in verschiedenen Formen: als künstlerische Installation (2014), als spekulativer Post-Internet-Datenrechner, schließlich als Buch. Die Künstlerin hat sich Big-Data-Strategien gestellt, indem sie mit Blick auf historische Klassifikationssysteme die Grenzen zwischen Objektivem und Subjektivem, Text und Bild, Archiv und Algorithmus aufgelöst hat. Von der Alphabetisierung hin zu Diderots Enzyklopädie und Adansons Klassifizierung von Pflanzen im Senegal; jeder – für die heutigen Wissenschaften hinfällige – Versuch, Wissen zu organisieren, bringt in seiner zeitgenössischen Wiederaufnahme unerwartete Verknüpfungen und Ikonografien hervor. Die drei hier veröffentlichten Essays nehmen diese Arbeit als Ausgangspunkt für eine Reise durch den Raum der menschlichen Kultur, die stets darauf aus ist, durch Beschreibungen und Klassifikationen Verständnis und Kontrolle zu gewinnen. Fari Shams lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf und London. European civilization Peter the great and the order of things is a work consisting of a projection, notice board, table presentations and a four-part publication. The work can be described as a humorous enactment of attempts to order and classify images and through its materialization presents the divergent narratives that assemble themselves as a result. Before a trip to Russia in 2013, listening to an online lecture on European Civilization and Peter the Great triggered a link between the then Czar of Russia, his habits, ambitions, politics and tactics and a contemporary social, political and economic European model as captured through images found in news magazines.
