These proceedings of an international conference funded by Excellence Cluster 264 Topoi at Freie Universität Berlin from 19th to 21st October 2017 contains a foreword by the series editors, an introduction by the volume editors, and 14 papers dealing with early iron smelting in Central Europe in the context of the Berlin-based DFG research project on early iron smelting in the Teltow region. The contributions focus on case studies on the diffusion of innovation in antiquity, the bloomery process as a key technology of the Iron Age, slag inclusions and provenancing in Northern Europe, early iron and iron working in Denmark, iron smelting in Early Iron Age Jutland, early historic iron production in the Netherlands, the Siegerland region as a mining district of the Iron Age, the early iron smelting district of the Jastorf Culture in the Teltow region, the beginnings of iron smelting in the area of the Przeworsk Culture, in Silesia, and Poland in general, the beginning of centralised iron production in Austria, geoarchaeological data on early iron smelting in the Eastern Carpathian Basin, and the chronology and fuel consumption of ancient iron smelting on the Island of Elba.
