Gerhard Richter is among the most prominent painters of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a career spanning almost 60 years. Beyond his monumental abstract and photo-realistic works, his working method,artistic processes and philosophy are less well known. The Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz captures the notoriously camera-shy artist at work.Using a pair of compact Leicas, Katz produced and hand-developed eighty black and white portraits of Richter painting, sketching and mentally processing his work. These candid photographs reflect genuine moments in the life of his subject, encompassing humour, melancholy and love. Katz, a veteranof the art world himself, has captured many other legendary figures in his work, and has exhibitedin some of the world’s most important galleries. Among his subjects are Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke,RosemarieTrockel, Martin Kippenberger and Georg Baselitz. Katz’s striking photographs offer newinsights into the celebrated career of Gerhard Richter.
